What is AP Art?

At NPC Arts Center, we recognize that each student’s journey is unique, and we are committed to providing the time and support necessary to cultivate their artistic talents. Our dedicated staff works tirelessly to ensure that every student achieves their personal best and develops a portfolio that reflects their individual style and creativity. We believe that with the right guidance and encouragement, every budding artist can flourish, and we're here to make that happen. Join us to explore your potential and bring your artistic visions to life.

  • AP Art is ideal for motivated students in Grades 10–12 who are passionate about art and design. It’s especially recommended for those planning to apply to art colleges or universities, but it is also valuable for students who want to strengthen their creative skills for other career paths.

  • No prior formal experience is required, but having some drawing or art background is very helpful. Our instructors guide students at their own level, so both beginners with passion and experienced students aiming to refine their portfolios can benefit.

  • The AP Art course typically runs for a full academic year (two semesters). Students will build a portfolio of 15–20 works that reflect sustained investigation, personal voice, and technical skill.

  • Students explore a variety of media and approaches, including drawing, painting, digital work, mixed media, and 3D elements. The focus is on developing a unique artistic direction while meeting AP requirements.

  • Students don’t take a written exam. Instead, their AP Art score is based entirely on the digital portfolio submitted to the College Board, which is reviewed by professional artists and educators.

    • Guidance on theme selection and portfolio development

    • Step-by-step feedback from professional instructors

    • Structured weekly assignments and critiques

    • Assistance with digital documentation and College Board submission

    • Earn potential college credit or advanced standing

    • Strengthen your art college applications with a professional-quality portfolio

    • Gain experience with college-level projects and critiques

    • Develop creativity, problem-solving, and visual communication skills
