The Art of

Game Art

Q: Who is this program for?
This program is designed for high school students (Grades 10–12) preparing to apply to Game Art, Game Design, or Interactive Media majors, as well as adults who want to enter or transition into the video game industry. It’s perfect for students who enjoy world-building, character creation, and interactive storytelling through art.

Q: Why is a portfolio important for Game Art?
Game programs are highly competitive. A strong portfolio shows not just drawing skill, but also the ability to design immersive characters, props, and environments that fit within a playable world. Unlike fine art, a game art portfolio must demonstrate both creativity and functionality — skills game studios look for when hiring.

Q: Do I need 3D or coding experience before joining?
No. While familiarity with 3D tools or game engines can help, it’s not required. The program begins with traditional drawing fundamentals and gradually introduces digital painting, 3D modeling basics, and design thinking tailored for games.

Q: What kinds of projects go into a Game Art portfolio?

  • Character sheets with turnarounds and costume designs.

  • Environment concept sketches and finished illustrations.

  • Props, weapons, or vehicles with functional breakdowns.

  • Creature designs showing anatomy, texture, and personality.

  • Process work that demonstrates ideation and iteration.

Q: How long does it take to prepare a portfolio?
A competitive Game Art portfolio usually takes 12–18 months to complete, depending on prior experience and the requirements of the target school or studio.

Q: How does NPC support my application?

  • Instructors with professional game studio backgrounds (AAA and indie).

  • A structured pathway that balances art fundamentals, digital tools, and game-specific design skills.

  • Personalized feedback on portfolio projects, with guidance on which schools or studios are the best fit.

  • Support with digital submission, documentation, and application essays.
